In the developing world of internet where everyone is connected on various platforms available on the internet, making it possible to have real time conversation with people thousands of kilometers away from us.

Almost two third of the world’s population is connected by mobile devices which count for 5 billion individual user and the count is calculated to reach 75% of the world population by the year 2020.

With this large number of subscribers to the phone who were interacting through text messages gave it a broad push to the idea of expressing the mood or feeling the person has through text. This idea provided the most revolutionary base for emoticons.

Emoticon is an integrated word from two different words in English which are Emotion’ and Icon’ which gradually developed to be called together as emoticons. An emoticon is a presentation of facial expressions in text through usages of particular symbols one after another to create a view such that it represents an actual human feeling that we show through facial definitions.

This freedom to express the human emotion while conversing through texts became world famous in no time, as people accepted the emoticons. An emoticon consists of eyes on the left then followed by a nose and a mouth symbols but the western style of skipping the nose symbol is also very popular.

Whenever the use of emoticons is done during a text conversation the ASCII automatically replaces it with some small graphical pictorial images. The beginning of emoticons can be traced decades back when the representation of one’s emotion on a writing was expressed through symbols.

The changes in the ways of representing an emoticon has changed widely over the period of time but many still prefer to use the older ones or traditional ones as that seems to be more detailed.

The usage of colon [:] to represent eyes, use of a hyphen [-] for nose and a curve bracket [)] to represent a mouth to create a smiling or a sad face [ 🙂 or 🙁 ] along with many variations to create various feelings like a use of semi-colon instead of colon for the eyes creates the expression of a wink [ 😉 ] , using the letter D after the colon transforms to become a grin face [ 😀 ] or the use of letter P after colon represents the teasing tongue out expression [ 😛 ].

Multiple expressions are created using basic punctuation marks and a simple change develops a new emotion while some very basic representation include use of an angular bracket with the number 3 to represent a heart [ <3] and the insertion of a slash in between them indicates a broken heart [ </3]. There are many organized variations used to represent different emotion through emoticons.

The use of emoticon became widely popular with the increasing usage of social media platforms such as Facebook, Twitter, Hangout, Instagram and many more. The most used emoticons on these platforms were a smiley face []
and a sad face [] which were later used with many other emoticons.

The platforms later started providing a separate keyboard selection for this representation of emoticons to express ones’ feelings, later which were called as Facebook emoticons, twitter emoticons and similar for other platforms. The usages of emoticons have brought new definition to the world of interaction through text.
